Naresuan University is pleased to announce the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science to His Excellency U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, in recognition of his leadership as the country's first non-interim civilian president in forty-nine years.
H.E. President U Thein Sein was born in the small village of Kyonku in the delta of the Irrawaddy river, known today as Ngapudau township. He graduated from the Defense Services Academy with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968. During his four decade military career, he rose steadily through the ranks, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in 2003 and General in 2007. He served as first secretary of the State Peace and Development Council and in 2007 was appointed prime minister of the Union of Myanmar, carrying out high level negotiations with neighboring countries. He served as prime minister for four years representing Myanmar at ASEAN and UN meetings.
In 2010, General Thein Sein retired from the military and won in the general election in 2010. He was sworn in as president on the 30th of March 2011. He has led a process of reform in the country to include the opposition into the government process and has reached out to negotiate peace with ethnic minority groups. Under his presidency, there has been a relaxing of restrictions on the media and increased international relations. Since becoming president, he has visited Thailand and other ASEAN countries, France, the UK, and the USA. President Thein Sein has stated that his goals are "to have peace and stability and economicdevelopment" in Myanmar. In April of this year, he was honored with the 'Pursuit of Peace Award' by the International Crisis Group (ICG). President Thein Sein has acknowledged that his is the time for change in Myanmar and that the country is moving forward to a future of political and economic growth for a tolerant and open society.
In recognition of the friendship between Naresuan University and the Union of Myanmar and the important role His Excellency President U Thein Sein has and will continue to play in realizing the aspirations of the people of Myanmar, Naresuan University is honored to award His Excellency President U Thein Sein an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science.
