Degree at the Naresuan University
Commencement Ceremony
on the Nineteenth of December in the Year of Two Thousand and Thirteen


Naresuan University is pleased to announce the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate in Education to H.E. Brother Armin A. Luistro, FSC (Fratres Scholarum Christianarum), Secretary of the Department of Education of the Republic of the Philippines, in recognition of his lifetime of teaching and developing education in the Philippines.

H.E. Brother Armin A. Luistro was born in Lipa City, Batangas, the Philippines. Early in his life, he chose a religious vocation entering the aspirancy program in 1977. He received his religious habit in 1981 and took his final vows to the brotherhood in 1988 at the La Salle Provincialate. He received a B.A. in Philosophy and Letters, an M.A. in Religious Education and Values, and a Ph.D. in Educational Management from De La Salle University in Manila. 

Beginning in 1983, H.E. Bro. Armin A. Luistro taught in De La Salle learning institutions at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. He was president of De La Salle University, Manila, from 2006 to 2010. On June 30th, 2010, he was appointed Secretary of Education of the Philippines by President Benigno Aquino III and assigned the monumental task of addressing the many serious problems in the education system. H.E. Bro. Armin A. Luistro has been the driving force in implementing necessary changes in the Philippine education system, particularly two cornerstone programs: the K+12 Basic Education Program and the Mother Tongue Based, Multi-Lingual Education agenda. These programs will have long lasting positive impacts on the education system. Previously, the basic education curriculum was for 10 years. By 2016 the K to 12 curriculum will be fully implemented. The second program supports the use of the local language from K through 3. In a country of over 7,000 islands, Secretary Armin A. Luistro hopes that the use of the mother tongue will aid cognitive development and socio-cultural awareness of these very young children. As he said to the Department of Education, he is embarking on programs "To change the destiny of our people."Over the years, H.E. Bro. Armin A. Luistro has received numerous awards for his work, including an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 2004.  

In recognition of H.E. Brother Armin A. Luistro's focus on ensuring the quality and equity of education at all levels in the Philippines where Naresuan University has forged numerous exchange programs as close members of the ASEAN Community, Naresuan University is honored to award
