Thammasat Chair Professor Dr. Surin Pitsuwan received a Bachelor's degree (honors) in Political Science from Claremont University, U.S.A., a Master's degree in Political Science from Harvard University with a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation, and a Doctorate in Political Science from Harvard University, U.S.A. He currently serves as a Deputy Head of the Democrat Party and a member of the House of Representatives. He was appointed Thammasat Chair Professor, serving as an advisor of Thammasat University.
Upon completing his Master's degree,Dr. Surin Pitsuwan worked as a lecturer at Thammasat University and after earning his doctorate, turned to politics becoming a member of the Democrat Party. He was elected a member of the House of Representatives for Nakhon Si Thammarat Province for eight consecutive terms. Since then, he has been entrusted to take charge of many important duties; for example Secretary of Mr. Chuan Leekpai, Chair of the House of Representatives, Assistant Secretary to the Minister of Interior, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and a highly honorable position as ASEAN Secretary General, of which he completed the term in 2012.
As ASEAN Secretary General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan worked to encourage understanding and cooperation among the member countries of ASEAN, to crystalize the concept of mutual benefits of ASEAN cooperative frameworks, to coordinate and monitor the progress of collaborative operations, and to assist in finding solutions where problems occurred.
As a politician of a distinguished stance, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan played a significant role as Minister of Foreign Affairs during 1997-2001, promoting the positive image of Thailand in an international arena, especially in the area of human rights. He also played a leading role in promoting peace in Timor-Leste (East Timor) and served as ASEAN Chairperson in meetings for political cooperation and security in the Asian-Pacific region. Due to this area of distinction, he was selected one of the most influential 500 Muslims worldwide.
In recognition of Dr. Surin Pitsuwan's outstanding work and contributions to Thailand and to the global community, Naresuan University is honored to award Dr. Surin Pitsuwan an honorary Doctorate in Political Science.
