Background
In 2011, Naresuan University launched a policy to establish Academic Center of Excellence (COEs) in field of Science and technology for supporting the higher education development plan edition 11 (A.D. 2012-2016). Center for Agricultural Biotechnology is one of 11 COEs; the agency has a status equivalent to the department in Faculty of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment.

Rationale
Today's world is facing with global warming, poverty, hunger, and water shortage in the age of globalization. Agriculture sector take responsibility in world food production. To cope with the problems involving food security, food safety, food quality and environment restoration, agricultural biotechnology is one of promise technology that can be used as a tool to produce novel crops varieties which has appropriate characters to climate change. New varieties such as drought tolerance, disease resistant, insect resistant, and high yield are needed. Including, processing of agricultural products to high value chemicals, renewable energy and biological-product such as plant-based vaccines product by molecular farming/pharming.

Center for Agricultural Biotechnology takes responsibility to develop human resources which have expertise in the area of agricultural biotechnology to serve government and industry sectors. Researchers in the Faculty of Agriculture Natural Resources and Environment, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medical Science, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Faculty of Allied Health Science join together to enhance post-graduate study and to promote collaborative research with leading institute or universities in Thailand or abroad.

Vision
To be a center of excellence generating and promoting agricultural biotechnology

Responsibility
-To conduct research in agricultural biotechnology for improving productivity, value addition to agricultural products and environmental friendly technology.
-To strengthen and enhance the endogenous capability of the participating faculty/universities through the staff development program and the short term capacity building programs designed and taught by a team of international and local experts.

Research Themes
Theme1. Economic Plant biotechnology
Improvement of economic plants; orchids, rice, physic nut, molecular marker for pbh14 genes, plant tissue cultures, plant-based bioactive compound.

Theme2. Industrial biotechnology
- Biorefinery, Food, Beverage, Bioplastics, Biofilms, industrial enzymes
-Biomass Utilization and Renewable Energy
-Pharmaceutical biotechnology
